SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA, September 25, 2002 - The destruction of
the tropical storm Chata’an that killed several and left thousands others
homeless in Chuuk has impacted the lives of citizens living in the mainland USA.
The aftermath of the devastating storm has been a busy one for Micronesians, at
least in California. The truth for many of us is, it is hard living here
pleasantly knowing the fact that our people are suffering back on the islands as
a result of the tragic event. Although it's not much, we are hoping that a small gift could
assist a life in some ways.
Hats off to the NoCal Chuukese communities for a job well done! After weeks
of hard work, the shipment of donated relief goods has finally lifted off, now
on its way to its destination Chuuk. Responding immediately to the tragedy, this
dedicated group of Chuukese have demonstrated great compassion and collectively
donated relief goods to help lighten the burdens of the victims who have lost
almost everything and are just barely making it through life.
Evidently, the Continental Airlines has been actively involved in providing
transportation for medical personnel and relief assistance to Chuuk from Saipan,
Guam and Hawaii. We are grateful that this service was also extended to
transport the relief goods donated by the NoCal communities out of Sacramento,
California.
"I won’t believe these relief goods will make it to Chuuk until they
are in the air," said Esther, who is the project coordinator. After a few
days, donations were already piling up in Mrs. Setser’s living room. Donations
of linen, shampoo, soap and towel were pouring in from several local hotels.
Esther was expressing how overwhelmed they have felt for the responses by local
community entities to contribute to this relief effort. Chuukese citizens as
Merlyn from Weno who are holding positions in local hotels were able to
convinced their employers to donate linens, towels and more to this relief
effort. Among the donors, a local Pharmaceutical company was willing to donate
medical supplies. Apparently, release of medical supplies requires certified
Chuukese doctor(s) to sign off certain release forms to conform to medical
regulations in the state of California.
We praise God for his loving grace that shown through good people as Esther,
Merlyn, Eileen and those who were participating in this project. These
individuals were the core initiators and coordinators of this wonderful
humanitarian relief project. Of course, we can not overlook the exceptional
support and active participation of their husbands. Accomplishing this great
task would have been much more difficult without their full support. God blesses
these good people for their love and compassion toward those in need of a
helping-hand.
Meanwhile, in Southern California, the MOMUSA and MASCAL are jointly
sponsoring a donation drive for Chuuk as well. Likewise, these two dedicated
groups are very excited to take part in this relief effort. Obviously, this
tragic incident not only impacted Chuukese but even our Pohnpean friends who are
living in SoCal. Profoundly, as soon as we sent out our request, they were the
first to respond back with their donations.
Transportation for this project will be provided by the PM&O Lines. This
shipping company has donated a 20-footer shipping container to expedite this
need. If all goes well, this shipment will depart Los Angeles October 25th
and arrive in Chuuk November 16th. For those who still want to
donate, we are still accepting donations up until the 15th of
October.
In particular, we want to acknowledge these following individuals from the
PM&O Lines for considering our request and providing us the service we need:
- Robert T. Colson, President, PM&O Headquarter, Oakland, California.
- Mr. Ron Reyes from Pohnpei, PM&O Regional Manager in FSM
- Denise Barney, Customer Service Supervisor, PM&O Headquarter, Oakland,
California
The Calrsbad Community Church in San Diego was donating a check of
$1,000. Fund collected will be used toward purchasing of farming tools and
a small portion toward inland freight cost. CCC has been assisting several
local churches in Micronesia including Mispah high school on Weno, Chuuk.
Earlier this year, CCC was also donating a bell (worth about $5,000) to the
newly built church, Sokehs Pah in Sokehs, Pohnpei. Thanks to our friend
Russ Nelson who is the church director of administration and the CCC Family for
their support.
