MOMUSA PRESIDENTS HOLIDAY WEEKEND VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT

San Diego JelloThe Micornesian Outreach Ministry USA (MOMUSA) held its Sport Ministry Volleyball Tournament during the long Presidents Day Holiday on the William Carey University Campus in Pasadena, California. On a typically beautiful, Indian Spring Southern California Saturday, 5 women teams and 4 men's teams met to decide the championship titles. MOMUSA was also blessed to have visiting friends and families from neighboring states.

After opening prayers from MOMUSA's ministry advisor Otoko and welcoming remarks from President Suka, the games began with the San Diego Women's Team "JELLO" squaring off against one of Pasadena's powerhouses, "AGABE". The men's competition opened with Pasadena's "ROOKIES", led by Yonder's and Tester's (Mortlocks) relentless spikes, taking on San Diego's "SENIORS" (as in "senior citizens")! Everybody was surprised that the San Diego seniors managed to go to a full three sets without a black eye from the killer spikes.

Time limitations necessitated that lunch was served as the games went on. The Pasadena women again prepared a superb lunch menu just as MOMUSA's Sports Council's (Byrd, Herbert and Surleigh) coordination of the whole event was another success.

The games reached their climax as the Pasadena women's defending champions "SHALOM" vied to retain its title against the young San Diego "JELLOS", and the Pasadena men's "A Team" met the San Diego "TERRORISTS". (The Pasadena crowd especially wanted their "A Team" to beat the "Terrorists Team" because one of the Terrorists star setter/spiker used to live in Pasadena but decided to move to San Diego because he wanted to play for San Diego)!

The JELLO-SHALOM championship was so tensely exciting that some husbands (i.e. Byrd, Surleigh, Herbert) of the SHALOM players had to leave their officiating positions to become instant coaches for their team while fathers, uncles, brothers and cousins (i.e. Sato, John Akapito, Jetson, Alton, Jason, Berry) of the JELLO players also took over the play-by-play coaching for their team. The JELLOS won, and the SHALOM players graciously congratulated them, showing excellent sportsmanship!!

The men's championship was equally exciting displaying real talents and skills on both sides. The San Diego Team had a MicroOlympian volleyball star on their team so they had their eyes set on the trophy!! Unfortunately for the Pasadena men's team, one of their star spikers sprained his ankle in the middle of the game and had to sit on the sideline and watched helplessly as his Team fell behind. The San Diego men's team won , and for the first time in MOMUSA history San Diego teams have swept both men's and women's championship games!!

Post-game interviews with the young JELLO players showed that they were glad they fired their old coach (Uncle Roman from Faichuk) before the games "because he spent more time drinking coffee and playing the California lottery than coaching them"!! The players and families all agreed the weekend was another memorable event, another moment of special fellowship for everybody. As it always is.
