Gentaleen Gladly Received Her Box of Donated Goods |

November 6, 2002 – Gentaleen survived but lost both parents during the devastating destruction of tropical storm Chata'an that struck Chuuk this year. She is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Orichy from Nechap village on Tonowas. Both parents were buried under a massive mudslide that surprised them while they were sleeping. It took exhausted rescuers days to finally discovered their bodies, but it was too late.
Evidently, these landslides that have destroyed Nechap were the deadliest ones that have claimed more lives than all the other landslides combined. Fortunately, Gentaleen was among the severely injured but survived ones. Apparently, she was immediately transported to Korea or Hawaii for medical treatment. Today, we are grateful that she is physically well and sound. This is a recent photo of her taken by Terry and Jody (from the Baptist Church in Chuuk) as she gladly received her share of the relief goods donated by the Chuukese Communities in Northern California.
Chuukese out of Sacramento, California were among those who responded immediately to the Chuuk Disaster. After weeks of stranded in Honolulu, on October 24th, the shipment of donated relief goods finally reached its destination Chuuk. Transportation was kindly donated by the Continental Airlines.
The next day after arrival in Chuuk, the goods were picked up by Jody and Terry Colson, members of the Baptist Church on Weno, Chuuk State. On the same day October 25th, an announcement was aired calling for the victims to come by the Colson's residence to claim their relief goods. One by one, the recipients arrived and claimed their packages. A sign off sheet was provided as each claimed his/her package. Gentaleen was the last recipient to show up to claim her package.
